2007 Christmas Light Power

posted Thursday, 13 December 2007

Here are my Christmas light power measurements and estimated use for this year.

Back Yard Tree (I only did 5 strings on one tree this year):
6.79  A rms
6.5 Hours per day
5.3  KWH per day

Front decoration:
8.26  A rms
6.5 Hours per day
6.44  KWH per day

Living Room Tree:
2.88 A rms
7.5 Hours per day
2.59 KWH per day

Dining Room Tree:
1.55 A rms
6 Hours per day
1.12 KWH per day

Front Room Tree:
1.41 A rms
6 Hours per day
1.02 KWH per day

AJ's Room Tree:
0.36 A rms
3 Hours per day
0.13 KWH per day

AR's Room Tree:
0.23 A rms
3 Hours per day
0.08 KWH per day

Rec Room Tree:
0.1 A rms
2 Hours per day
0.02 KWH per day

Total:
21.59 A rms peak
16.7 KWH per day average

At a cost of $0.10 per KWH, the total cost for the season is $41.75 for the 25 days this year the lights will be on.

The Rec Room tree was a new tree this year so I bought LED lights.  It has about the same amount of lights as the dining room or front room tree for less than 1/10 the power.  The LED lights are quite expensive though so replacing existing working lights may not make economic sense yet.  One thing I've noticed about the LED lights this year is that the colored lights look almost too perfect and the colors are a little off of what you're used to in Christmas lights.  Overall I like the colored lights though.  The white lights though look very bad.  They almost have a cold bluish color to them, instead of the warm yellowish color that incandescent white Christmas lights have.  So the LED light manufacturers are going to have to work on improving the white lights.

Some would say 6 Christmas trees in a house is a lot. We actually have 7 in our house, but the 7th only has ornaments and no lights on it so it doesn't use any electricity. My wife is very enthusiastic about Christmas! I'm enthusiastic as well, but put most of my energy into freezing my butt off while putting up lights outside.
