In the August 2007 issue of IEEE Spectrum magazine, there was a story about an online stock trading contest. The contest is organized by Interactive Brokers Group, to promote careers in the financial industry to engineering students. The contest requires participants to develop a quantitative trading model, and then automate that trading model using a computer program. Participants are given a starting amount of pretend money and then their programs run and complete trades for a period of time and whoever has the largest amount of money at the end wins [1].
The article also contains some links to sites where you can learn more about financial engineering jobs and I will repeat them as follows:
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos259.htm
http://www.fenews.com/directories/universities/index.htm - It appears Financial Engineering News has ceased publication
I did some further investigation into the Interactive Brokers Group contest and it is called the Collegiate Trading Olympiad.
