Today a 60 W light bulb in a lamp burned out and a I replaced it with a GE Soft White 100 bulb that uses 26 W of power for a savings of 34 W. I added a column to my tracking spreadsheet to track savings to date in kW hr and then used the total of that column to compute the total amount of money saved to date. Since starting this experiment in November 2005 I have saved an estimated 1508 kW hr and at $0.10 per kW hr that translates to about $150.
I also recently found some LED light bulbs at Sams Club. They are intended for 40W replacements in appliances or other small light fixtures. The light bulbs are bright but very directional and not difused. I was wondering if these bulbs would work with standard dimmer switches and I tried it out and they do not. The light bulbs are not very usable because the light is so concentrated and does not spread out.
