New Calculator

posted Tuesday, 31 July 2007

As mentioned in the previous article on engineers and their calculators , one of my Sharp calculators broke.  I first looked at Sharp models to replace it, but I just bought a Sharp calculator within the past year (EL-506W) and it appears that they do not have a newer model yet.  I didn't want two of exactly the same calculator, so I decided to try something new.  I found the Casio fx115-es model very similar to the Sharp calculators.  It has constants and unit conversions and algebraic calculation entry.  Some things that I like better about the fx115-es vs. the EL-506W are listed as follows:

  •  Mode where numbers can be shown as fractions and results shown as fractions in normal numerator over denominator notation instead of some side by side notation
  • It is much easier to switch between scientific, engineering, and decimal notations
  • You can select which multiplier you want for scientific notation (103, 106, 109, ect.)
  • You can scroll back through previous calculations AND results and use those in new calculations
  • The x-1 function is on a first function key and easy to find (it is on a second function key on the sharp in an odd location)

So far I like this calculator better than the Sharp EL-506W.  Here is a picture of the new calculator.
