Toaster Oven Reflow Project - First Time Melting Solder
posted Saturday, 7 March 2009
Today is the first time I attempted to melt solder in the toaster oven. I just wanted to put a circuit board from a very old and obsolete cable converter box in the oven and remove the components. The board was a single sided through hole board. I set the oven controller to 437 F (225 C) with both top and bottom burners on and put the board in. At approximately 330 F I noticed quite a bit of smoke. At this point many components would pull right out. I proceeded to remove all of the components. Many of the components pretty much melted in the process of removing them especially ceramic capacitors. The board was also severely warped and had quite a few char marks on it in the process. I also used the oven to remove the components from an old USB memory stick with much better luck. This time I turned on only the top burner. One thing to note is that the maximum temperature with just the top burner was about 429 F at 50 F ambient temperature in the garage. This would be a temperature rise of 379 F with just the top burner. The surface mount components were very easy to remove when the board was in the oven for a few minutes at 400 F.
